Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
